Low maintenance front garden

My client spent a lot of time working away from home, and so specifically required a low maintenance planting scheme for his small front garden.

After and before pictures, show how re-turfing and re-planting this small garden, can really transform a small space.

For this small, low maintenance planting scheme, I opted for sticking with evergreen planting.

Once established, the Phormium tenax will create a striking, evergreen centrepiece.

I used evergreen perennials, such as Bergenia ‘bressingham white’ for its bold foliage, and Artemisia ‘powis castle’ for its contrasting, silvery aromatic foliage, against Heuchera ‘palace purple’… 2 of my favourite perennials.

Heucheras are fabulous, as they come in SO many varieties of colours.
Artemisia is absolutely striking once it becomes established, being evergreen with its bushy habit, it looks amazing all year round. And best of all, especially during these drought conditions we’ve experienced this year, artemisia is drought tolerant! Happy days!! 🙂

Also pictured in the planting scheme, is Euonymus fortunei ‘blondy’.

This is an extremely tough and durable plant, and will thrive pretty much anywhere. Euonymus is slow growing, so is perfect for small, low maintenance gardens like this one.

And finally, Choisya ternata. Used at the back, to provide some height. Choisya thrives in sun or shade, is evergreen and produces masses of lovely scented flowers in late spring, and foliage with a similar scent to basil.
