FRUIT & VEG

  • Grow basil
  • Mulch plum trees in Spring
  • Grow olives in a sunny, sheltered spot and in well drained soil
  • Plant cherries
  • Prune newly planted trees.
  • Cover trees with net to prevent bird damage. Watering regularly prevents ripe fruit splitting.
  • Plant easy to grow salad crops for children.

PLANTS

  • Plant evergreens and climbers. Also plant perennials now.
  • For the butterfly border, plant; Astrantia, Nepeta, Eryngium, Bergenia, Red Valerian, Sedum and
  • Sow hardy annuals; Calendula, Love in a Mist, Californian poppies, sunflowers, nasturtiums, cornflowers and flaxes. Can be sown directly into borders. Sunflowers can be individually sown.
  • Treat acid loving plants to an ericaceous feed
  • For herbaceous border plants, add blood fish and bone fertiliser.
  • For woody plants that haven’t bloomed very well, add high potassium sulphate of potash with usual fertiliser. Re pot with John Innes 2 or 3. Add fertiliser like Miracle gro.
  • Clay soils with a previous fertiliser are more fertile.
